According to the High Country Association of Realtors, first quarter real estate sales have been the highest since 2008. First quarter sales are 27% higher than the same time period for 2011 and 60% higher than than 2010. Laurie Phillips, executive officer of the association is optimistic that we are "now experiencing slow, but definite gains in our area." Interest rates are expected to remain favorable for home buyers.

This low-cost Blue Ridge Mountain town provides free public transportation via a regional bus service, AppalCART. Residents can attend free outdoor concerts at the Jones House Cultural and Community Center on Fridays in the summer. Seniors age 65 and older can also enroll in classes at Appalachian State University, tuition-free.

In the annual report of County Health Rankings recently compiled by the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Watauga County ranked 6th out of 100 North Carolina counties. The evaluation takes into account factors affecting both length of life and quality of life.
